By  |

CBD is on every corner, but do you know about CBG? Discover CBG vs CBD to decide which product is best for your needs. We’ve outlined what you need to know!

By now, you probably know all about cannabidiol (CBD). A substance found in the Cannabis sativa plant, CBD is now contributing to an industry that’s expected to exceed $20 billion by 2024. In fact, it’s available in everything ranging from gummy bears to dog treats.

While CBD sellers seem to pop up on every corner, there’s a lot people don’t know about its sister cannabinoid, CBG. What is CBG exactly, and how do CBG benefits differ from CBD oil benefits?

Keep reading to find out!

What Is CBG?

The Cannabis sativa plant contains over 60 cannabinoids, though the most popular include:

  • Cannabichromene (CBC)
  • Cannabidiol (CBD)
  • Cannabigerol (CBG)

CBG is actually the precursor to CBD, CBC, and THC. The latter, THC, is best known for the psychoactive effects it causes. CBG and CBD, however, won’t alter your state of mind.

Also referred to as the stem cell, CBG only appears in small quantities within the cannabis plant. The fact that it’s so scarce is one of the reasons scientists haven’t studied the full spectrum of CBG benefits yet.

BCGA is the inactive form of CBG. Over time, CBGA breaks down and becomes the molecule all other cannabinoids form from.

Without CBG, we wouldn’t have CBD or THC.

The human body has a system called the endocannabinoid system. It’s the system responsible for regulating your:

  • Mood
  • Appetite
  • Metabolism
  • Sleep
  • Pain response

Cannabinoids react to your CB1 and CB2 receptors to cause mood swings or weight gain. By using products with the CBD or CBG cannabinoid, you can stabilize your body to avoid negative changes.

The Difference

What’s the difference between CBG vs CBD?

According to a recent study, CBG might be a partial agonist of cannabinoid receptors. If that’s the case, CBG oil might serve different purposes than CBD can. As a result, CBG has the potential to treat different ailments as well.

When CBG vs CBD, you’ll notice a lot of similarities, too.

For example, both can activate CB1 receptors, which would decrease psychoactive in the body. As a result, both CBD and CBG can help counterbalance the high people experience from THC.

Both CBD and CBG might also help relieve ailments such as depression and anxiety. However, researchers are still studying the effects that the CBG cannabinoid can have on the body.

The Benefits

Research has explored a few CBG benefits. However, it’s important to note that people experience different reactions to cannabinoids like CBD and CBG.

First, it’s thought that CBG could help patients with glaucoma. However, patients also continued using their doctor-prescribed medication.

CBG oil might also contain antibacterial properties that could help treat methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, which is a type of staph infection.

Using CBG products might also help:

  • Inhibit GAMA reuptake
  • Reduce colitis inflammatory bowel disease symptoms
  • Fight neurodegenerative diseases like Huntington’s and Alzheimer’s
  • Inhibit cancer cell growth
  • Fight inflammation

However, more research is needed to explore these benefits.
