What Do iGaming and Quiz Games Have in Common for Entertainment?

By  |

Everybody loves a quiz. Whether we get full marks or know absolutely none of the answers, the excitement and competitive spirit stoked by doing a quiz brings with it a unique sense of enjoyment. The events of early 2020 have led to a huge rise in online quizzes –held by those with large followings on Instagram live, or in smaller groups on Zoom and other video chat apps. Moving quizzes online is reminiscent of the rise in iGaming titles that dominated digital spaces. So, what do iGaming and quiz games have in common to provide exciting entertainment options?

Do You Feel Lucky?

One of the most obvious links between quizzes – pub quizzes and quiz shows – and iGaming is that both have an opportunity to win prizes. Both have a level of skill – online poker requires strategic knowledge, for instance – and both have an element of the luck of the draw.
For instance, the first UK winner of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, Judith Keppel, had her final question for the £1 million about someone who lived in a French town she just happened to have visited recently. Had the question been on something just as obscure but out of her knowledge field, she might not be sitting where she is as one of the country’s most prolific quizzers. In iGaming, games such as roulette are certainly based around the luck of where the ball lands.

Classic Quiz Show Inspiration

iGaming and quizzing aren’t just linked through the tension that both bring for their players. Quiz games are often used as an influence in various iGaming titles. For those interested in betting and playing at the same time Deal or No Deal or No Deal provides that added level of tension. Players can choose between different boxes – like on the show – that offer different prizes. The game takes the TV experience and gives it to you to see how you would actually fare.
The gameshow functionality works well as an iGaming title as the show is rife with tension, which can be replicated well online. There are also slot games such as the Wheel of Fortune and the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire slots which take inspiration from the quiz shows and infuse them with slot gameplay.

Added Digital Elements

Both iGaming and quizzes have moved online and have found new elements to add into the gameplay. The Houseparty app allows quiz rounds that involve the classic game ‘Heads Up’, where you have to guess a person based on clues given by other quizzers. It also has elements taken from Pictionary, where you draw the answer. iGaming has also added elements unique to its digital platform, such as adding video clips into the traditional reel gameplay.

The quiz website Sporcle also takes classic trivia games and uses the ease of the online platform to make them more fun. For instance, guessing countries around the world is more enjoyable when each right answer lights up on a map – and you don’t have to go scouring through lists in encyclopedias to find the ones you might have missed.
iGaming and quizzing go hand in hand. They both bring out the competitiveness of players and create a tense environment. Both have also done well by adapting their traditional format for an online audience. Creating a new experience on a digital platform has enabled them to thrive in a new way.
