Tips To Protect Your Home From Theft

By  |

Protecting your home from theft is very important because nowadays, there are a lot of risks that we tend to take without even realizing. It’s important to make sure your home is protected and secure for the sake of you and your family’s safety, as well as your belongings. Here are some tips to protect your home from theft.

nstall CCTV Or A Security System

Firstly, it’s a good idea to look at the security system that you currently have in place, if any at the moment. Security systems and CCTV, although seen as an invasion of privacy to some, it can actually help to be a deterrent from theft. By having evidence and footage of your home both inside and out, it can help bring more victims of crime and theft to justice. There are lots of advancements in technology, which means you can get some pretty impressive state of the art CCTV systems that can help keep your home locked and secure at all times. Try to have at least some form of security system in place, even if it’s an alarm. It’s important to make sure these alarms can be triggered from both the front entrance and back entrance and if possible, any areas that lead to your rooms. This can be a good way of covering all angles on the ground floor, should someone come in through the front, back, or a window in the basement. You can never be too careful, and this can certainly give you peace of mind. Having evidence for a break in will definitely help if you end up going to a criminal law firm for help.

Keep Valuables Out Of Sight

Keeping your valuables out of sight is important, and you want to make sure that anything that’s valuable isn’t sitting within view of a window or cat flap. We can be very relaxed when we’re in our own homes, but the reality is that even the most secure homes can get broken into if there’s something of high-value in view. If you can’t move those items, say, for example, a television or a desktop computer, close the curtains or blinds fully. If you don’t have any, then now is the time to get some. Don’t leave your valuables in view because that’s going to be risky for you and your household. Make sure you’re keeping a watchful eye over your belongings and not putting them anywhere where they might get stolen.

Secure Windows & Doors

Over time, windows and doors can become weakened through general wear and any heavy weather conditions. It’s important to try and secure these areas of your home because otherwise, they can make it vulnerable. Test your windows and doors to make sure the locks and handles are working correctly. Also, look at the quality of your windows to see if they’ve come away from the wall and are therefore compromised from a structural point of view. With your door frames, make sure they haven’t warped in any way from weather conditions over the years. If you do see some damage, it’s important to try and get them replaced as quickly as possible. The longer you ignore them or dismiss the damage, the more you risk your home, your belongings, and yourselves.

Have Lights On Timer For When You’re Away

Lights are a good way to deter people from entering your home. One of the most common cases of homes being broken into is when the household is away on vacation. It’s a good idea to try and put things in place that will help make it look like you’re still at home. If you’re going away on holiday, try not to put anything on social media because that will definitely open up your home for theft. You can also invest in some technology that can put all your lights on timers. That means that when you’re usually in your home, your lights can come on, even when you’re abroad. And if anyone is looking at your property, you can have your lights turn off, so it looks like you’re moving around your home.

Get Friendly With Your Neighborhood

You can help yourself and your home by getting to know those within your neighborhood. It’s good to always be friendly with those next door and opposite you, just in case you’re in an area that is prone to break-ins. Having a community watchdog operation in place can be really handy to ensure that everyone looks after one another. This can be good when you’re going away and perhaps want a neighbor to stop by and take a look at your home, just to make sure nothing has happened whilst you’ve been away. If there’s not a friendly neighborhood watch in place at the moment, you can always make that happen yourself. Pop around each person’s home and ask if they want to be part of the group or just post through your contact details.

Reinforce Your Home

There are many ways to secure your home, and if you’re looking for something extra, then think about the outside of your home. Your garden area can be a good place to reinforce the security of your property. Instead of bushes or low fences, put in bigger fencing that is stronger and have a gate that you can lock at night. This can just help to create that extra barrier that you might want for your home. You might also want to have a beware of the dog sign, even if you don’t own a dog. It can stop people from wanting to break in because they’d risk alerting you through your ‘dog’.

You can never be too careful when it comes to your home. Look out for your neighbors, and they’ll return the favor. Reinforce your home where you can, and if you’ve not got security in place, get it. The more effort you can make to protect your home, the better you’ll feel as a household.
