90% of homes in America have what is known as ‘hard water’. This is water that contains minerals, such as calcium and magnesium.

While this won’t do you any harm to drink, hard water can be a nightmare for things like your kettle and shower. This is because it encourages the development of limescale and removing hard water scale can be a challenge.

Fortunately, there are lots of great ways methods for removing minerals from water that are clogging up your home’s appliances. Want to know more? Then you’re in the right place!

Read on to find out four effective methods for removing mineral stains and build-up caused by hard water.

1. Remove Build-Up With White Vinegar

You can spend a lot on antiscalant products, so you might be surprised to find out that simple white vinegar can also do the job effectively. This is because vinegar is an acid that breaks down calcium and other hard water deposits.

Simply soak taps and other fixtures in a bowl of hot vinegar and watch the hard water deposits dissolve away! Once you’ve washed your vinegar down the sink pouring a kettle of boiling water will also wash away the smell.

You can also use white vinegar to remove tough spots from your glasses and dishes.

2. Lower the Temperature of Your Water Heater

Heat encourages the build-up of limescale and other hard water deposits so keeping your heater as cool as possible will reduce this.

This is also why it’s important to flush your water heater out regularly. This will get rid of any sediment that has built up and stop it from clogging your home’s pipes. If necessary, you can even use white vinegar to wipe it down!

3. Use Rinse Aid in Your Dishwasher

Hard water can be a nightmare for your glasses and dishes for two reasons. Firstly, it’s more likely to leave spots or stains that are tough to remove. But secondly, it also prevents your dishwasher from creating enough soap to remove them!

This is why it’s a good idea to use rinse aid in your dishwasher if your home uses hard water. You’ll notice the difference within the space of a single wash!

4. Instaling Electromagnetic Water Softeners

Knowing how to descale your kettle or showerhead is all well and good but you could save a lot of time and energy by going to the source of the problem. Electromagnetic water softeners work to remove minerals and soften your water before you use it in your home.

These are installed in your home’s plumbing systems and treat the water before it comes out of your taps.
