The Essential Guide To Looking After Your Eyes As You Age

By  |

It’s never too late to start looking after your eyes – in fact, you should try to get into good habits as soon as you can. For most people, a lot of time is spent looking at a computer, at a tablet, at a TV, and at a phone. Making sure we’re not letting these screens damage our eyes and taking further precautions is a must.

Below, we’ll take a look at what you should be doing to look after your eyes as you age.

Eat Well

Looking after yourself from the inside out is important for your health – yes, even your eye health. Making sure your diet is balanced and that you’re getting plenty of fruit and vegetables will help you to stay healthy and protect your eyes in the long run.

Avoid Smoking

Smoking is bad for many reasons, but smoking has been closely linked to macular degeneration, which can cause blurred vision and other issues. If you’ve noticed changes in your eyes and you smoke, quitting could be one of the best things you can do to slow down the process.

Wear Sunglasses

Wearing sunglasses is so much more than making a fashion statement. Wearing a pair of sunglasses that you love can help you to reduce your risk of cataracts and protect your eyes from harmful sun rays in the long run. If you’re constantly squinting into the sun, then you may struggle with your vision later on in life. Plus, you’ll have more lines on your face due to squinting and damaged skin around the eye area.

Go For Eye Tests Regularly

You should be going for eye tests with a reputable eye doctor every 2 years, or even more frequently if you already experience problems. Finding a reputable eye doctor in your area is a must, so read third party reviews and ask people you trust for recommendations. You may think that there’s nothing wrong with your vision, but an experienced professional with the right equipment will be able to spot an issue much sooner than you. Plus, they can actually see if there are any issues forming inside of the eye, not just whether there are issues with your vision.

Get Some Exercise

Exercise is crucial for your circulation, which is good for the eyes. Of course, exercise is also good for weight management, and obesity has also been linked to macular degeneration. Exercise will give you endorphins, better circulation, better health in general, and allow you to maintain a healthy weight.

Sleep Well

Sleeping isn’t enough – you need to sleep well if you’re going to have healthy eyes. As we sleep, our eyes are cleared out of junk. They become lubricated and they work to get rid of dust, smoke, and other irritants that have accumulated throughout the day. If you still get dry eyes, then you may want to use a moisturising eye spray to lubricate them and keep them healthy.

Do you do any of the above to take care of your eyes?
