Personal Safety 101: How to Protect Yourself When Working Alone

By  |

Just because you’re on the clock doesn’t guarantee your safety. In 2017 there were over 800,000 aggravated assaults in the US and those working alone are at risk. Being a lone worker in any field requires extra vigilance to stay safe in potentially dangerous situations.

Let’s take a look at some working alone safety tips to help ensure that you stay safe when you’re working alone.

Stay Alert

No matter where you are or what you’re doing you should always stay alert. Being able to spot a dangerous situation before you’re in it is half of the battle already won. Pay close attention to your environment and the people around it.

When you work alone, suffering an accident can be a big problem if you don’t have the means to contact anyone when you’re injured. So always be careful and stay focused. Be observant of other people and learn to spot warning signs in people’s behavior.

Don’t Be a Target

Working alone can put a target on your back, but there are ways to remove it. Pay attention to how you move through the world. Stay calm and confident. If you are confronted with a situation then try to stay that way. Coming across as scared can make you appear as a victim, whereas being too aggressive can escalate a situation.

Carry Personal Protection

Should danger knock upon your door, it’s always best to be prepared. Everyone should carry some form of personal protection if they’re working alone. Pepper spray, double action OTF knives, and personal alarms are all viable options. Always make sure you’re trained and comfortable using whatever personal protection you carry.

Let People Know Where You Are

If you’re working alone then it’s important to let people know where you are. You should also arrange to contact people at regular intervals. If anything happens to you such as a fall or you injure yourself, having someone know where you are might be the only way to get the help you need.

Adhere to Health and Safety

Working alone is not the time to be taking risks. If you work in potentially dangerous situations or with potentially hazardous substances, it’s important to be extra vigilant.

Do everything carefully and by the book to ensure you minimize risk. Follow risk assessments and always ensure that all possible control measures are put in place to help keep you safe.

Get Trained

Make sure you receive adequate training in your field if you’re going to be working alone. This should include first aid training and any specialized training for your job.

If you are working alone and out in public then it might be beneficial to take a self-defense class such as Krav Maga, to help teach you about awareness and how to protect yourself.

Be Safe When Working Alone

Working alone can put you at greater risk from accidents and violence, but that’s not to say you can’t take care of yourself. By following these safety tips and tricks you can help prevent disaster and be ready for it should it be lurking around the corner. Always stay alert, stay vigilant, and be safe.
