Should You Go Back to School as An Adult?

By  |

Your High School days might seem an awfully long time ago now and you may have thought you had left them behind forever, but have you ever thought about going back?  Millions of people decide to go back to school every year for one reason or another, and for every person who does, there are usually others who are thinking about it. How do you decide if going back to school is the right thing for you? Here are some things you may want to consider.

Do You Have Your Dream Job?

What do you think it would feel like to wake up every morning knowing you are off to work at your dream job?  Amazing, right? Most people do not work in their dream jobs whether it be due to financial reasons, their needs changing or anything in between.  It may be that you do not have the qualifications such as a masters in elementary education Merrimack College that would make you feel confident enough to teach grade school, or maybe you feel you do not have time to study for your accountancy qualifications.  Whatever it is that is holding you back, perhaps it is time to consider going back to school and make yourself happier in your working life.

Career Advancement

It may be that you already have a job you love and that is fantastic.  However, will you be able to climb the corporate ladder without further study?  Many people go back to school when they have been working for a while to avoid being stuck in a rut.  If you have been considering a management course or something that may further your career, it may be wise to ask your HR department if they will sponsor you.  After all, it is in the best interest of your company to help you advance, as it saves them the cost of hiring someone new.  They may say no but if you don’t ask the question, you definitely won’t get what you want.

Cost is an important factor to consider as an adult.  There are bills to be paid and it is not always easy to drop everything and pay to further your education.  However, have you considered studying part-time so that you can carry on working?

It is true that the cost of education can be expensive, but on average, you can earn a lot more money with a postgraduate education than without one. Perhaps the question you should be asking yourself here is not so much ‘can I afford to go back to school?’ but ‘can I afford not to?’

If these are issues that you have found yourself considering recently, then it is worth looking at your options and making an informed decision about further education.  It is said that you always regret the things you didn’t do a lot more than you regret the things you did do.  Perhaps now is the time to go for it.
