CBN vs CBD: A Comparative Guide

By  |

CBD’s been catching on in a major way for the past few years. At this point, 40% of people between the ages of 18 – 29 have tried some form of CBD product. That means that nearly half of young adults are taking CBD products for some of their many medicinal properties.

CBD is just one of the beneficial products to come from Cannabis, however. Cannabinol, otherwise known as CBN, has been gathering a dedicated following recently, as well.

So which one should you take?

Here’s a side-by-side comparison of CBN vs CBD to help you decide which one will better suit your unique requirements.

CBN vs CBD: Which One Is Right For You?

The first step in deciding between CBN vs CBD is understanding what CBN is. This will help you know which cannabinoid is right for your needs.

What Is CBN?

Cannabinol is a molecule commonly found in aged THC. It’s commonly found in older Cannabis for this reason. This makes older Cannabis sometimes preferable for those who appreciate the effects of CBN.

CBN is similar to CBD in that it’s not an intoxicant. It does have a number of beneficial medicinal qualities, though. Here are a few of CBN’s more popular medicinal traits.

Antibacterial

Recent studies on CBN have reported that it has powerful antibiotic properties. In laboratory studies, CBN has shown to have a profound impact on MRSA bacteria, which is known to be highly resistant to antibiotics. This suggests that CBN has more potent antibacterial qualities than the traditional antibiotics already on the market.

These results hint at a future where CBN is prescribed to treat infections too powerful for regular antibiotics. These results stand to help legitimize Cannabis-related medicine even more so than it already is today.

Neuroprotectant

CBN has also been found to protect the nervous system in a number of ways. In laboratory studies on rodents, CBN has shown to be effective in treating ALS, otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. It’s also shown to be effective in delaying the onset of the degenerative neural disease.

These results suggest that CBN may be useful in the fight against other degenerative neural conditions. This is glad news indeed, as so many progressive neural illnesses have proven to be so resilient against existing treatments.

Stimulates Appetite

Another study in rodents shows that CBN causes subjects to increase their intake in food. This is one of the most sought after side effects of THC. This is good news for those who use Cannabis for its appetite stimulating properties but don’t care for its intoxicating properties.

Glaucoma

Cannabis is also frequently prescribed to help treat glaucoma. Another CBN study suggests that Cannabinol can help to reduce intraocular pressure, which is one of the most common causes of glaucoma.

This is also good news for patients who are currently using Cannabis-related products to treat glaucoma but want to avoid the intoxicating properties.

Anti-Inflammation

CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties are also some of its most sought after qualities. CBN has also been found to have anti-inflammatory qualities similar to CBD. Test results on rodents have found CBN to be effective in diminishing the effects of rheumatoid arthritis. It also hints that CBN and CBD can often be used interchangeably, should one or the other prove to disagree with you.

CBN vs CBD: Which One’s Right For You?

Cannabis has around 150 different cannabinoids. Each one has its own effects. Even so, CBN and CBD have proven to be some of the most sought after for medicinal purposes.

It’s understandable that CBD is perhaps the best-known and most sought after cannabinoid for medicinal purposes. It’s the second highest molecule found in Cannabis, behind THC. This makes it the go to for those looking to experience the beneficial qualities of Cannabis without the intoxicating qualities.

This also makes it a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy. This means that many growers breed their strains to contain even more CBD.

Choosing between CBD and CBN often largely comes down to a matter of personal choice. The two compounds share a lot of similar qualities. Both work on the endocannabinoid system, for instance.

Both are known to have the beneficial qualities of Cannabis but without the intoxicating qualities of THC, as well. This is a bit of a misnomer, however. Some CBD products can produce a bit of a “high” due to their powerful properties. They just avoid many of the more common negative properties associated with THC such as anxiety or paranoia.

This can cause a bit of a euphoric effect, as well, which can act similar to a Cannabis high.

CBN is known to have more of a downer effect, by contrast. This can make CBN preferable if you’re seeking a Cannabis product as a sleep aid.

CBN can feel similarly to THC as well, though. It works on the CB1 cannabinoid receptors in the nervous system, which are the same neural receptors impacted by THC. For all intents and purposes, CBN can feel similarly to a weak THC.

As we have seen, deciding between CBN and CBD largely boils down to a matter of personal taste as they’re both so similar. CBN is more similar to THC, however, and it produces a similar euphoric effect. If you’re sensitive to the “highs” associated with THC, you’d do better to steer clear.

CBD can still produce an almost euphoric effect due to its medicinal properties. Sometimes the lack of negative sensations can feel like euphoria!

If you’d like to experience the many positive properties of CBN, you can often find it at a wholesale CBN price!
