How To Tap Into Your Creativity

By  |

Whether you’re a naturally creative person but sometimes struggle to get going or you find getting creative really difficult, there are some things you can do to tap into your creativity. It’s no good sitting at a blank piece of paper or a computer screen wasting your time, if you need to get creative then there are many ways to do it. It’s also no surprise if you are struggling right now, the pandemic has hit everyone differently but on the whole, people are having a hard time, they are worrying about jobs, money, their health and also finding it hard not seeing their friends or family and not being able to go out. Your ideas and creativity come from getting out and seeing and hearing things, so if you’ve been stuck indoors for months then it’s no surprise that your ideas have dried up. However, it’s not too late, you can still get it back, and here’s how:

Write Things Down

Whether it’s your feelings or ideas, just get out your pen and paper and write something down. If you don’t have any ideas then don’t try to force them, simply write down how you feel. It might not be that something comes to you straight away but in a couple of weeks you might look at what you’ve written and an idea will spark. Alternatively, if you do have any ideas, write them down, even if it’s just something small. If you keep doing it then you never know, you might soon end up with a book. Writing allows you to express yourself and it also helps you to get clarity so don’t worry about what you’re writing, it’s just for you and it can really help you to get creative again.

Meet New People

This is a difficult one at the moment as everyone is stuck indoors and groups and clubs aren’t running right now. However, the internet will open doors to millions of people you can talk to who you might never meet in real life. Join an online group or course just to meet new people. Get chatting to them (it’s easier to do when you’re sat behind a screen) or strike up a conversation with someone you haven’t seen for a long time. Once you get talking and more importantly, listening then you never know what you might learn or hear. It’s always good to spend time with different people from different places, backgrounds and of different ages. Actor and director Travis Preston relies on his creativity for his job, so he works with professional actors and students alike and has collaborated with several seasoned actors, directors, orchestras, and theater professionals. If you mix with different people in different stages of their lives or different industries to you, you will see things from new perspectives which is very useful when you need to be creative.

Get Outside

As mentioned, sitting in front of a screen or a blank piece of paper and doing nothing is no good for anyone. To get creative you need to get outside, go for a walk, a bike ride, or a run. Ideas flow when you’re outdoors, you see things, you hear things and you have an escape which allows your brain to think clearer and for your creative juices to flow.
