Three Reasons Why Every Couple Should Take the Myers Briggs Test

By  |

Whether you have just started seeing someone romantically or you have recently celebrated a milestone with your significant other, there is never any harm in getting to know each other better. You can be extremely close to your partner, yet not understand why they act the way they do. You may have completely different personalities when it comes to dealing with conflict or decision-making, and therefore, you may need to shine a light on each other’s differences or blind spots.

Before we delve into the reasons why every couple should take the Myers Briggs test, let’s explore what this test entails. The Myers Briggs test is a questionnaire that can provide you with great insight into a person’s type of personality, their strengths, their weaknesses, their preferences, and even how they perceive the world around them. It only takes around 10 to 15 minutes to complete, after which you will be categorized into one of 16 different personality types.

Briefly each of the four categories will result in a letter and your final personality type is a combination of four letters. For example, the first category looks at whether you are an outward or inward person, also known as extrovert or introvert. If you answers lean towards extraversion, the first letter of your personality type would be an E. The second category determines how you prefer to digest information, this could either be through sensing or intuition. The third category is all about making decisions and whether you choose to think or feel before making a choice. Finally, your last letter focuses on how you prefer to live your outer life, which could be by judging or perceiving. Your results will come up with a combination of letters such as INFP or ESTJ. This test can give you an unbiased understanding of your partner’s outlook on life, so why not give it a go and explore each other’s personalities?

Understand What Makes Each Other Happy

The personality test can help shed some light on what makes your partner happy. Each personality type will possess a certain group of traits that will make them feel good about themselves. For example, an INFP will value spontaneity, freedom, and originality. They are introverted and won’t appreciate being forced into social situations. An ENTJ will enjoy specific goals, making a difference in the world, and being the more dominating partner out of the two. An INFP might be swept away at the thought of a surprise getaway, whereas an ENTJ may find this move to be too imposing on their meticulous schedule.

Learn to Understand Your Partner Socially

Social outings are often the reason for many quarrels in a relationship. This is often an issue when an extrovert is dating an introvert. Whereas an extrovert will flourish in large social situations, their introverted partner may feel less comfortable. Although you may be attracted to one another because of your differences, you should still make sure to see things from your partner’s point of view. If you are the extrovert, make sure to go over to your partner and double check that they are doing alright. If you are the introvert, don’t feel offended or jealous if your partner is engaging with new people.

Know How to Handle Conflict

After you know your personality type, the test will identify the way you tend to handle certain situations, how you perceive the world around you, and how you like to make decisions. This is especially useful when you need to handle any sort of conflict. For example, ESTJ’s tend to value efficiency over everything and therefore they often lose sight of the feelings that their partner may have. On the other hand, INFP’s are renowned for avoiding any sort of conflict so they need to focus more on articulating their points in arguments. Identifying these different traits and finding an appropriate balance with your partner can help you grow stronger as a couple.

At the end of the day a personality test won’t determine whether you and your partner are meant to be. Nor will it be the cause of your breakup. However, it can be used as a fantastic tool to get to know each other on a deeper level. This test may give you a greater understanding as to why you share certain similarities or differences. Knowing how and why your partner acts the way they do is a solid foundation for a healthy relationship.
