6 Surprising Things That Can Trigger Your Headache

By  |

If you’re prone to headaches, you probably want to find out the root cause so you can better treat them and live a happier, healthier, (mostly) headache-free life. The thing is, it can be more difficult to locate the source of a headache than you might think due to the fact that there are some pretty surprising causes of headache that you may not be aware of. Let’s take a look at some of them now.

  1. Pain elsewhere

It’s not unreasonable, if you have a headache, to think that the source of the pain is in or around the head, but that is not always the case. For example, jaw pain from TMJ can also cause headaches, as can neck pain, shoulder pain, and a whole host of other pains., So, if you want your headaches to disappear, you may have to treat your other health issues first. See a doctor and try to get to the bottom of it all.

  1. The weather

Sudden changes in the weather can be inconvenient if you haven’t dressed for them, but they can also cause headaches and migraines in particular. Whether there’s a sudden drop in temperature or a sudden soar of the thermometer, if you’re susceptible, it could spell trouble for you. Oh, and some people are also sensitive to rain too. Unfortunately, there isn’t much you can do about these kinds of headaches except ensuring you always have the relevant pain medication available to you.

  1. Perfume

Perfume may smell amazing, but it could also be making you sick. Strong scents are strongly associated with headaches and migraines in a lot of people, and although it’s ulcer why this should be the case, if you’re prone to headaches, you may want to steer clear of strong smells for the foreseeable and see if your health improves as a result.

  1. Hair ties

Yes, really. Hair ties and other accessories can cause headaches if you tie them too tight. When you do this, they pull on your scalp and strain the connective tissue in that area, which can lead to a major headache for you. Loose hairstyles are truly the way forward!

  1. Vigorous exercise

Strenuous exercise may be good for your heart health and your fit bod, but it could also be the cause of your headaches. There is a definite link between exercise and headache, which is more common in people who are already prone to migraines.

It’s important to note that headaches from exercise can sometimes be a sign of serious illness, especially if you also have blurred vision, nausea and neck pain, so be sure to call an ambulance if that happens.

  1. Bad posture

If you sit slumped at your desk all day don’t be surprised if you end up with a serious headache because poor posture can cause tension to build up in the neck and shoulder muscles and that can lead to, as we mentioned earlier, pain in the head too.

Hopefully, this has helped you to identify your own headache triggers so you can finally get some relief!
