4 Wedding Guest Etiquette Tips You Need to Know

By  |

You’ve received great news in the mail today. One of your best friends from college is getting married in a few months, and you’ve been invited as an honored guest.

Don’t put the invitation on your coffee table and leave it there. You need to let the couple know as soon as possible if you’re going to be able to make it.

Failing to do so is a prime example of poor wedding guest etiquette. You can do worse to make a couple’s big day stressful, though. Check out this guide for a complete list of wedding guest tips that you should keep in mind.

  1. Don’t Leave the Couple Hanging

When you receive the invite in the mail, head over to your calendar the same day and check to see if you can be there. If you don’t have anything else planned, go ahead and RSVP on the invite and send it back to the happy couple.

They have mouths to feed and seating charts to plan. If you wait until the last minute, they have to rush to plan for you to be there. To say that this is stressful is a massive understatement.

  1. Avoid Bringing a Plus One or Your Kids

If the ceremony is a small wedding for two, chances are there are a limited number of wedding guests they can invite. So, unless the invitation states that you can bring a plus one, assume that you can’t.

Don’t RSVP for one person and bring a guest or your kids. Again, the couple has to plan for meals and seating. The arrival of an unplanned person can cause massive amounts of chaos.

  1. Come With a Gift

Most couples have a registry with things that they need listed. Find out where they registered and buy one of the requested items. If you can’t quite afford a gift from the registry, give them money instead.

Have the gift sent to the address on the registry. Don’t bring it to the wedding reception. The happy couple doesn’t want to have to worry about bringing a trunk full of gifts home.

  1. Follow the Dress Code

Don’t wear wedding attire that’s too flashy. The bride might get a little offended if you take attention away from her. If the ceremony is being held at a church, chances are you don’t want to show off too much skin.

Avoid any shade of white. In the past, black was looked down upon for weddings, but it’s not a bad shade for evening ceremonies. Remember, if you’re at a complete loss for what to wear, ask the couple.

Practice Proper Wedding Guest Etiquette

If you’ve been invited to someone’s big day, it’s important to practice good wedding guest etiquette. You don’t want to spit upon the happy couple by wearing white or causing unneeded stress and drama.

If you’re unsure if you can bring a plus one or don’t know how to dress, talk to the bride and groom. They’ll be able to point you in the right direction.
