How And Why Has Our Perception Of Cannabis Changed?
It’s fair to say that the world and society as a whole has completely shifted its perception on cannabis. Indeed, several years ago cannabis used to be put in the same bracket with dangerous drugs such as ecstasy, heroin and LSD. However, as times have moved on, we have a different understanding of this substance, how it affects us and how it can help us. Let’s explore this shift in perception in a little more detail.
The main push behind the shift in perception of cannabis can certainly be found in medical research. Indeed, multiple research papers have explored how cannabis could be used in a variety of different ways. For instance, a large percentage of the research has looked at whether cannabis can help those suffering from chronic pain and deliver much-needed pain relief. Other research papers have explored whether cannabis could be used to treat mental health conditions such as social anxiety. The conclusions of these studies have largely been positive and they have also revealed that there are limited to no long-term negative impacts of using cannabis. But it’s not cannabis that most researchers are interested in. Instead, it’s what can be derived from the cannabis plant.
The Importance Of Cannabinoids
There are more than 100 cannabinoids that are derived from the cannabis plant. Some of the most recognized examples are THC and CBD. CBD is legal in most places and can even be purchased online. That’s because it contains virtually zero levels of THC. THC is the cannabinoid that delivers the high that cannabis is associated with. There are plenty of other cannabinoids that also have low levels of THC too. Researchers are interested in how these cannabinoids could be used and the impact they might have on the human body as well as the mind. Thus far the results are promising but experts have warned that a lot more studies are needed here.
Changes To The Law
There have been significant changes to the law surrounding cannabis. For instance, a large number of states have legalized cannabis for medicinal purposes. Other states have legalized it for recreational use as well. That’s amazing because a few years ago, this would have been a hippie’s pipe dream. Unfortunately, there are still people in jail for cannabis-related charges. But organizations and developments such as the Last Prisoner Project are working to correct this wrong and ensure that people go free.
A New Idea?
It might seem as though legalizing cannabis for different uses is a new idea. However, there have been groups for decades including top minds campaigning for this to happen. The only change is that the government is finally starting to listen and understand that cannabis is not as harmful as we first assumed.
It’s clear then that the world has changed its view on this substance. The amazing thing is that we’re still only scratching the surface of what different cannabinoids are capable of. Five years from now, our perspective of cannabis could have shifted even further thanks to more research into exciting possibilities.
