Should Anybody Bother Starting a Blog in 2021?

We live in an era where it seems everything has to enter the world fully formed. In the case of a business, we’ve got to cater to the customer’s needs instantly, so the nature of “finding your feet” appears to be non-existent. You either tread water, or you drown. And it seems that the very nature of starting a blog in the modern day is difficult. It appears that 99% of blogs are likely to fail, and it begs the question, is it worth starting a blog in this day and age?

Do People Still Read Blogs? 

People do, but we have to remember that content is consumed in different ways. For many people who start a blog, they go into it thinking they will change the world, they just need the right web hosting platform, an idea, and the world is theirs! But crafting blog content is not just about text anymore; it’s to do with the fact that we have to assume that the modern audience has zero attention span. People need to scan blog posts, watch videos, check infographics, but also listen to podcasts and engage with off-site content. This means that you’ve got to go beyond blogging as something that doesn’t involve writing but involves creating content in a variety of methods.

What Does it Take to Be a Successful Blogger? 

Firstly, we need to get rid of the term blogging. Creating is a far more useful term, as this will help you think more about the variety of tasks necessary to engage with an audience. This means looking at your desired audience and using plugins such as XML Sitemaps to optimize SEO and Google Analytics to see if you are getting the right people, and therefore the right traffic. When you have the right tools at your disposal, you’ve then got to think about your voice, and while many followers like sticking with a blog to see how they develop over time, if you are looking to capture the imaginations of people, you’ve got to get down and dirty with your marketing tactics. It’s something that we’re all aware of, but if we want to be a successful blogger, we have to diversify, but we’ve got to be a mini marketing genius as well. 

Is it Worth Staying Away from Blogging? 

Blogging is not obsolete in 2021, but if we look back to 10 years ago, arguably, many people were late to the party then. But you have got to ask yourself what you want to get out of a blog. If you’re after numbers, traffic, and therefore money, you’ve got to go where everybody else is going, diversifying with video content, infographics, etc. However, a blog, in the traditional sense, is an incredibly personal thing and is an amazing way to develop a kinship with a handful of people. 

Ultimately, if you want to find an outlet for your voice, a blog could be the best way to do it because it is something you can put out there, and not necessarily gain traffic, while also developing your voice, which you can then apply to other types of content, or rebrand your blog later. Should anybody bother starting a blog? Yes, but you’ve got to decide what you want to achieve first.
