They concluded that about half of all deaths were attributed to babies sleeping on the stomach or side, and about 16 percent of the cases were related to co-sleeping with parents. Smoking by mothers doubled the risk of SIDS. This is a sobering thought for any mother who has smoked during or after their pregnancy. The rate of mental deterioration at an advanced age occurs up to 5 times faster in smokers than in non-smokers. A study conducted at Erasmus University in the Netherlands and published in the journal Neurology examined 9,200 men and women over the age of 65. They were asked to take achievement tests at the beginning of the study and two years later. The highest rate of mental deterioration was found in the men and women who smoked – regardless of the family history of dementia or Alzheimer’s.
