How Cleaning Your Bedroom Can Entirely Change Your Mindset

Picture this: You’ve just returned from the dispensary and you’re ready to plop down on your bed and light up the pre-roll you’ve got in your bag. It’s going to be a relaxing morning, and then in the afternoon, you’re really going to get down to business: Doing the dishes, getting some laundry done, calling your mom, and starting that huge to-do list you’ve got on the fridge.

Only, wait … didn’t you say that yesterday?

And the day before?

It’s amazing how to-dos can add up. And how that backlog of work can, in turn, create a huge ball of anxiety in your mind.

When this happens, it’s important to take a step back and evaluate: Just what is it that’s really holding you back from carrying out your daily responsibilities?

You’d be surprised at how often the answer is … a messy room.

What’s a messy room got to do with tackling things on your to-do list?

Naturally, this doesn’t make sense at first.

If your bedroom is messy, can’t you still do the dishes in the kitchen sink? Yes.

If your bedroom is messy, can’t you still do the laundry? Yes.

If your bedroom is messy, can’t you still call your mom and mow the lawn? Yes and yes.

But here’s the thing: It’s all about mindset.

The Importance of a Clean Bedroom

A clean bedroom means a clear mind. This is true whether you’re 15, 21, 30, 45, or 70.

That’s because your bedroom is your place of refuge. It’s where you start your day and where you end your day. For many people, it’s where they spend time reading, surfing the web, talking to friends and family members on the phone, and generally daydreaming and meditating on their lives.

Imagine doing all of this in a place that’s basically chaos — with clothes and books and knickknacks strewn everywhere. Living and being in an environment like this can create disorder and confusion in your mind. Then, when it comes time to do other things in your life, you’re not mentally prepared to organize your thoughts and attack a new challenge.

5 Simple Steps to Clean Your Room in Half an Hour

The good news is that cleaning your room doesn’t have to be a daylong process. In fact, you can do it in as little as half an hour if you set your mind to the task and fully dedicate yourself to completing it.

Here are some simple steps to get you started.

1. Gather what you need.

Before you start the actual task of cleaning, get together some tools and accessories you’ll need. Start with a large garbage bag. Chances are, you’ll be putting a lot in here, so it’s first on the list.

Next, get together some cleaning supplies. You’ll want:

  • Microfiber cleaning cloths
  • A roll of paper towels
  • Glass cleaner
  • Surface cleaner
  • Extendable feather duster (optional)

Finally, create four bins or boxes (large bags if that’s all you have). Label each one as follows:

  • Things to give away
  • Things to give back to people
  • Things to recycle
  • Things that go elsewhere in the house

2. Put things away.

Begin the cleaning process by starting in one corner of the room and working your way around the entire perimeter. You’re going to be picking up every item you see and putting it in its right place. If you already have a place for it in your bedroom, put it there. If it fits any one of the four bins or boxes you’ve created, put it there.

Naturally, throw things away that you no longer need, and create a pile of clothes and linens you need to wash as well. When you’ve finished cleaning up all of the items in your room, start your laundry, and continue cycling in new loads to wash and dry as they become complete.

3. Dust.

Next, go around all of the surfaces in your room and dust them with your microfiber cleaning cloths. If you have dust, cobwebs, or bugs near the ceiling, use an extendable feather duster to clean there.

4. Clean.

Finally, return to all of the surfaces in your bedroom and clean them with your paper towel and surface cleaner or glass cleaner.

5. Make your bed.

Lastly, make your bed. Use fresh, clean linens from the laundry, and make this haven for sleep look comfortable, neat, and appealing.

There’s no doubt that any number of tasks can still be accomplished when your bedroom is in disarray. Still, think about the broader point being made here: By cleaning up your room, you’re clearing away the cobwebs of your mind and starting with a fresh and neat foundation for your surroundings. This is a gift to your psyche.
