4 Signs You May Have a Home Electrical Problem

By  |

Your home’s electrical system is the nerve center of your home. Electrical problems are not always clear and easy to fix. In many cases, unless you have experience with electronics repair, it’s best to call in a private contractor to help you safely deal with any problems. The issue is, many electrical problems are not easy to detect until you have a dangerous issue.

Electrical problems can indeed be dangerous and even deadly. Faulty wiring could cause house fires that can be devastating for your family. If you suspect that you may have an electrical problem or plan on completing any home renovations, you may want to research electrician services.

Knowing how to spot the signs that you could have a potential problem is the key to avoiding a serious problem. Let’s take a closer look at a few signs you may have a home electrical issue that needs immediate attention.

Tripping Circuit Breakers

Your electrical circuit breakers and fuses that are located in your control panel are designed with safety precautions that make them trip or automatically disconnect if there is a problem like an electrical surge. Your breaker may trip to the off position, or your fuses may blow if they are getting more current than they are designed to handle. It’s not unusual for this to happen every once in a while; however, you should call in an expert to investigate the cause if it is happening a lot.

Flickering Lights

If you notice that your lights or lamps are flickering or dimming, it may be more than a supernatural occurrence. While the simple answer for your flickering lights may be faulty bulbs, it could also mean that you have a more serious electrical problem. Flickering or dimming lights could mean that you have an interruption in the power supply. In many cases, if your neighbors are also experiencing this type of power light flickering, it may be a local problem with the main electrical lines. However, if it happens only in your home, you may want to call in an electrician. You could have an appliance or circuit that is pulling in too much current to be safe.

Warm Switches and Sockets

An easy and effective way to test if you are having electrical issues in your home is to feel your sockets and switch plates. Turn on your lights and after a few minutes, feel your switch plates to see if they are warm. You can perform the same tests on your outlets by plugging in your appliances and then testing the plates for warmth. You should call an electrician if you see any browning or yellowing around the plastic covers on your switch or socket plates or smell burning plastic.

Shocks

If you are getting shocked by your light switches or electrical sockets, you may have a serious problem. Getting a shock can seem minor, but it could indicate a dangerous current that is not being properly protected inside your switches or sockets. If you get a shock, it’s time to call in a professional electrician to investigate the problem.

A professional should always deal with your home’s electrical system. If you find any of these signs, your home could be at risk of an electrical emergency.
