The Proper Attire: How to Dress for Golf

By  |

Golf is a sport that requires some special gear, but the most important thing is your attire. It’s important to dress appropriately so you don’t distract other players or slow downplay. Here are things you should know before stepping out on the green for one of your next rounds!

UV Protection

Golfing can be a fun and rewarding experience, but it also requires you to spend hours in the sun. Golfers know that the sun can be a real pain in the neck. They also know that if they want to continue their game, they need protection from UV rays and other sources of light. That means that you need to protect yourself from UV rays by wearing sunscreen, sunglasses for golfers, and a hat with an extended brim to keep the sun out of your eyes. The risk for skin cancer is significantly higher for golfers than other types of athletes because they are exposed to more ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

Sunscreen

This may seem like an obvious tip but sunscreen must be worn when playing golf in the summer or on bright days. There are different types of sunscreen for different purposes – some are waterproof and last all day, while others need to be applied more frequently throughout the day to maintain protection from the sun. The best thing to do is bring several pairs of sunglasses with you when you go out because sunscreen can wash off if caught in a rain shower or even heavy perspiration during your game. Also, choose sunscreens specifically created for sports activities instead of other products – these offer better protection and will not bother your eyes.

No Baggy Pants

Avoid wearing pants that bag in the knees or at the bottom of your pants. These types of loose-fitting clothes can hinder a proper swing and cause restricted movement on the course. Pants should fit close to your body but not so tight as to restrict movement. Golfers need to dress in a way that allows them to move around easily and not distract other players. Slacks are the best type of pants to wear when playing golf. They are comfortable and allow you to move around without having to worry about your clothes getting in the way. Alternatively, golfers can wear shorts that are worn just above the knee, just under the knee, or mid-thigh. If you’re concerned about protecting yourself from UV rays, wear light-colored pants instead of dark-colored pants to prevent overheating.

Shirts With Collars

Wearing a top with a collar shows players you’re ready for golf and respect others around you. Make sure collars are worn up – don’t wear them down, which is considered ‘sloppy’. This also applies to shirts that have buttons instead of a collar like polo’s – these should be buttoned up while playing too. Collar-up is the required dress standard for men, but women have more options when it comes to choosing what to wear.

Shoes With Rubber Soles

When you’re on the golf course, wear rubber-soled shoes. Sports like basketball and tennis require special kinds of shoes that have traction on the bottom to keep players from slipping. This is true for golf as well. You want to avoid wearing slippery or leather-soled shoes because they can cause your feet to slip during swings. If you need to wear dress shoes, make sure they have rubber soles so you don’t lose your footing. Also, keep in mind that you will need to change into proper golf shoes once you’re on the course.

Avoid Fragrances and Colognes

Just like how you wouldn’t wear a lot of cologne or perfume to the gym, it’s best not to wear these items when you play golf as well. Some people are allergic to fragrance and can end up with a bad headache from wearing it – even those that don’t cause an allergic reaction can still be disruptive because they’re strong scents that other players will notice and might find distracting during their game. You don’t want anything getting in the way of your focus and preparation before hitting the green so avoid fragrances altogether!

As a general rule, dress in comfortable clothing when playing golf. You don’t want to wear your pajamas and slippers because it’s not appropriate for outside play – but you should also avoid wearing things like jeans or sweaters. Golf attire is not too difficult to think about. You just need to consider the type of clothes that are good for the weather and the conditions, as well as those that won’t distract other players during their game. Follow these tips and you should be properly dressed each time you go out on the green!
