Stage 1 – Gather Your Tools and Tiles

Installing wall tiles is not rocket science, but you do need to have the right tools. This includes:

  • Tile cutter
  • Thin-set – premixed makes life easier
  • Grout
  • Grout float and sponge
  • Notched trowel
  • Spirit level
  • Chalk line
  • Rubber mallet

You’ll also need some beautiful tiles. The design you choose will make or break your project, so choose carefully. For stunning terrazzo styles, check out https://versatilesurfaces.com/real-terrazzo/.

Stage 2 – Prep the Wall

The walls need to be smooth and in good condition. Any bumps or undulations in the wall will show through in the end result, so don’t take a chance. If they’re in bad condition, you may need to get them fixed.

In most parts of the home, it’s fine to install wall tiles on drywall and plaster. But in wet areas like bathrooms and behind the kitchen sink, a cementboard is a better option. It won’t degrade like drywall will if it gets wet.

To provide a key for the adhesive to stick to, sand painted surfaces.

Stage 3 – Get It Level

You need to know the layout you’re going to use before you start installing wall tiles and make sure that they’re level. Find the center point of the wall and work out from there.

Arrange a full horizontal row of tiles and a full vertical row. Don’t be afraid to move them around to get the design just right and remember to allow space for the grout. Then use a chalk line and a spirit level to place your first tile exactly right.

Stage 4 – Install the Tile

Get the right adhesive or thin-set for the area you’re going to tile. There are different types of wet and dry applications. Apply it to the wall using a notched trowel held at a 45-degree angle to produce an even layer.

Begin by placing the first horizontal row, sticking closely to your chalk line. Keep checking that it is level. Use tile spacers for even gaps.

Always place the tiles carefully onto the adhesive – never slide them in. This will make the adhesive bunch up and be uneven.

When you reach the opposite wall, you’ll need to carefully trim your tiles to fit.

Stage 5 – Grout for a Stunning Finish

Once the adhesive has fully cured, remove the tile spacers. Prepare the grout according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Apply it with a grout float, making sure that it is well embedded.

Use the wet grout sponge to carefully remove it from the surface of the tiles. Do not allow any grout to dry on the tiles. When it’s dry, buff away any haze left behind.
