Do We Really Need All Our Modern Day Vices?

Yes, we live in a material world, and yes, most of us enjoy our creature comforts. But do we really need all the vices that come along with them? Let’s take a look at some of the more common ones and see if they’re really worth all the fuss.

Alcohol: It’s no secret that alcohol is bad for you. It’s a depressant, it’s addictive, and it can lead to all sorts of health problems. So why do we keep drinking it? For many of us, it’s simply because we enjoy the way it makes us feel. We like the buzz it gives us and the relaxation it provides. But is that really worth all the risks?

What You Can Do About It

  1. Find balance. Make sure you’re not overindulging in any one thing. Too much sugar is bad for your health, but a little bit here and there is perfectly fine. The same goes for social media, gambling, shopping, and work.
  2. Moderation is key. If you’re going to indulge, do so in moderation. have one drink instead of four, gamble a small amount of money instead of your life savings, and buy one new item instead of a whole new wardrobe.
  3. Be aware of the risks. Don’t be naïve about the dangers of these activities. Know what you’re getting into, and make sure you’re taking steps to minimize the risks.
  4. Make sure it’s worth it. Before you indulge, ask yourself if it’s really worth it. Is the sugar worth the risk to your health? Is social media validation worth the risk to your mental health?
  5. Live in the moment. One of the best things about life is that it’s constantly changing. So even if you screw up, don’t dwell on it. Just enjoy the moment and move on.
