Creating a Morning Routine That Will Energize Your Day

Do you often arrive at work feeling tired, achy, and like you’ve already done a full day? Mornings can be hectic, and we’re often in a rush to leave the house, only to sit in traffic or on busy trains and buses trying to get to work. Our mornings are unusually rushed, and rarely enjoyed, so it’s no wonder that we start work feeling tired and in need of a rest. 

While this is common, it’s not a great start. Start work tired and in a bad mood and you are unlikely to work productively or to a high standard, you won’t enjoy your time, and soon this can start to hurt your mental health. The good news is, that there are plenty of small things that you can change to create a morning routine that will energize your day and help you to get going on the right foot. 

Get Up Earlier

Getting up earlier might sound counterproductive because it typically means getting less sleep. But getting up earlier means that you’ve got time to do more in the morning and that you don’t have to rush. This can reduce stress and fatigue and give you a chance to enjoy your morning. 

As you start to get used to getting up earlier, you may find that you start wanting to go to bed earlier, or that being more tired at bedtime means that your quality of sleep improves. 

Exercise

You might need to get up a lot earlier to exercise, but if you can it’s a great idea. A short yoga session, a quick HIIT workout, or an early morning jog can be a fantastic way to boost your energy levels, help you to feel more alert, ease any aches and joint pain, boost your circulation, and improve your mood and your confidence. 

People who work out early in the day often report feeling more energetic but also happier and more focused. If you don’t have time for a full workout, try to do some stretches before you shower. 

Enjoy Your Morning Coffee

Your morning coffee shouldn’t be rushed or drank on the go. It should be something that you take the time to enjoy. Brew an Americano, and sit and sip, enjoying the flavor instead of rushing. Eat a Healthy, Nutrient-Filled Breakfast

Breakfast is the most important day, so don’t rush it. Instead, try to make the most of it. Breakfast is a great chance to get a head start on your fruit and veg target for the day and eating fruit in the morning is a fabulous natural energy boost. 

Try to add yogurt for protein, which can help you to feel full for longer and reduce afternoon fatigue, and wholegrain cereal for fiber

Do Something for Yourself

Doing something that you enjoy at the beginning of the day is a wonderful act of self-care that prioritizes your needs and helps you to set the tone for your day. For some, this could be exercise, but you could also read a book, write in your journal or listen to a soothing podcast.

Get Organized

If you regularly struggle to get out of the house on time without a big rush and lots of stress, one of the best things that you can do to make your mornings more energizing starts the night before. Spend some time getting organized. Simple things like using a key hook and leaving your jacket and bag on a peg by the door can make a huge difference. 

If you want to go further, you could even prepare your lunch the night before and get your clothes for the next day out ready. 

Change Your Commute

Even with a great morning routine and an earlier start, the stress doesn’t stop when you leave the house. It can actually get worse. If your commute means sitting in traffic or having to sit on crowded transport and you hate every second, consider making a change. Could you walk or cycle to work? Or at least part of the way? Would an earlier train or a different route be quieter? Don’t put up with a stressful commute if there are other possibilities. 

Mornings are tough, especially if you don’t consider yourself to be a morning person. But by making small changes that you can stick to, your body will quickly get used to things. It will soon start to enjoy having more energy and feeling more alert, and in no time getting up earlier will be easy. You might even start to enjoy your commute, and you’ll certainly enjoy all of the other benefits of an energized morning routine.
