How to be More Cultured

By  |

If you’re someone who’s more likely to be found watching ‘Married at First Sight’ than ‘The Marriage of Figaro’ but you want to change that by becoming a little (or a lot) more cultured, then you will be glad to know that there are a lot of simple things you can do to increase your culture quota and, in doing so, enrich your life, as you will see below.

Read more books

If you pretty much never read anything that isn’t your Twitter feed or Facebook, then start by picking up any book that looks interesting to you and read it for a quick entry into the world of culture. If you are already a reader, then you can still use books to become more cultured by reading more and reading from new genres, reading classics from outside of the Western canon, and by reading non-fiction books about everything from algebra to mushroom cultivating, that you might not have been interested in before.

Look at some art

One of the most fulfilling ways to be more cultured is to start looking at art. It’s really easy to learn about art in your city by visiting local museums and galleries and simply wandering around looking at the exhibitions and seeing what you like and dislike, while trying to work out why. Once you have a feel for what you love, start exploring those styles more by reading books on art theory and history. You may even want to try picking up a pencil or paintbrush to create some art of your own. However you explore art, one thing’s for sure – your life will be much enriched by it.

Visit a new place

Being cultured means understanding cultures other than your own. So, one great way to be more cultured right now is to simply head off to some place you have never been before. Ideally, this would be another country, but if time or budget constraints prevent that, then even visiting the next town over or a new part of your city can help you to be more cultured. The key is to speak to the locals and see what makes them tick, try the local delicacies, take in the local arts and fashions, and basically immerse yourself in your new location, soaking up as much as you can.

Take in a classical concert

Many people think they don’t like classical music, but that’s because they have never really given it a fair chance., Attending a local open-air classical music concert where the music ios performed live in front of you can be a revelation, Most people cannot fail to be moved by classical music once they give it a chance, and in doing so, they also get to understand music more, hence it is a great way to be more cultured.

Being more cultured is a life’s journey, so never stop exploring new things, exposing yourself to new ideas and ways of being, and our life will be so much richer for it!
