You may miss seeing Beau Mirchoff as Matty on MTV’s hit series, Awkward, but you won’t for long. He is returning to the big screen in Flatliners. We got to catch up with Beau. Here is what he said:

You are switching from a more comedic role as Matty on Awkward to a more serious role in Flatliners. Was it fun to do something different? 

Absolutely! Though I have been fortunate enough to do a variety of different roles in different genres, even while filming Awkward.

What was it like to work with such a star -studded cast, including Ellen Page and Kiefer Sutherland, on Flatliners?

It’s always great working with talented actors because they elevate your game. Plus Jack Bauer was, is, and always will be my hero.

How did the 1990 version of Flatliners influence your performance in the 2017 reboot?

This version is completely different. It has a different director, script, and actors. So, other than understanding the tone of the film, the original didn’t have much influence over my performance. But I watched it a bunch because it’s awesome.

What’s the biggest surprise Flatliners will bring to its audience?

I can’t tell you the biggest surprise, but I can tell you that there is a lot of twists and turns!

How do you relate to your character, Jonathan, in Party Boat?

Jonathan is someone who loves to have a good time, and I can definitely relate to that. We also have hairy chests.

You are joining Brett Davern (Jake on Awkward) again on Party Boat. Were you excited to be working with him again?

Of course! How cool is it that best friends get to go shoot a movie together in a different state on a beautiful lake? It’s incredible. We also have good chemistry, we work well together, we dissect scenes together and we speak the same language. Acting language…but we also speak English together.

What has been the most challenging role you’ve played in your career so far?

I played Treat in the play Orphans by Lyle Kessler a few years ago. He’s an orphaned street kid who robs people to provide for himself and his mentally ill brother. That was a big challenge, but the most rewarding and fun acting experience.

Do you have any rituals that you do before you enter set and begin a scene?

I do a series of vocal warm-ups and relaxation exercises. Sometimes I play the guitar and freestyle some verses to try and get into a playful mood.

If you weren’t an actor, what else would you want to be?

Maybe a classics professor/writer. Or something to do with biology…I love nature!

Do you have any advice for aspiring actors?

Work hard and get serious about the work!
