Diamonds are one of the most precious gems in the world. It’s rareness, exquisite design and magnetic aesthetics make it an appealing and highly demanded stone in the markets. As with anything that has high demand and a limited supply, there are bound to be fakes and counterfeits. This is especially true for diamond necklaces for women since it’s a huge market.
So how to check if your diamond necklace is the real deal?
Before testing a diamond’s authenticity, there are a few factors to keep in mind. The fake counterparts can have a very familiar resemblance to diamonds. The reason is that at most times, they are colorless versions of sapphire, topaz, and zircon. So if you wish to buy one that has no specs of being fake, firstly check if they have certification from one of the following:
- AGS
- IGI
- GIA
Along with this, the following are a few ways you can test the authenticity of the diamonds.
Test Using Water
Get yourself a glass, and pour water in it. You can use cold or warm; it does not change the result. Now, very carefully drop one diamond gem into it. Diamond has high density, meaning that it will sink. If it floats in the middle or at the brim, it is a fake.
Testing with Fog
This method is relatively simple. Start by wearing a pair of gloves, and place the diamond on your palm. Next, take your mouth close to it and blow air on it to create some fog on it with your breath. If the diamond does not retain the fogginess, it is authentic. However, if it stays fogged up for too long, it is a fake one.
Using a UV Light
Using a blue light or UV light to test a diamond’s authenticity has been a reliable method. However, many claim that it is not a conclusive test. What you need to do is to turn off all lights in the room and prevent any from seeping in. Next, switch on a black light and put the diamond in front. If the diamond has blue fluorescence under it, you are holding a 100% genuine gem. However, if the hue is slightly green, yellow, or even greyish, it can be fake.
Take an expert’s advice before concluding on the results.
Fake Diamonds Under Magnifying Glass
Perfection is not everything. Diamond validates these statements. When you put a diamond under a magnifying glass and find some imperfections, you have the real deal. However, if your diamond is precise and impeccable to the core, maybe it is time to give your jeweler a visit. At times, perfect diamonds also refer to real ones, but are highly expensive. If it’s on a necklace, make sure your jeweler removes the gemstone from its setting on the necklace. A loose diamond is more effective for testing purposes.
Try the Dot Test
Using the dot test can help run a quick test on your necklace’s diamonds. For this, take a piece of paper and draw a dot with a pen. Make sure it is a small dot. Next, lay down the diamond, flat side down over the point.
If the gem has a circular reflection of the dot inside it, you are dealing with a fake diamond. The logic behind this is the laws of refraction. A diamond is refractive, meaning that lights on it will bounce in different directions. It will not be through one straight line.
Takeaway
There are many ways to know if a is authentic. But the best way to ensure authentic purchases is to shop from genuine sellers and make sure they have certification.
