Tottenham Hotspur are currently enjoying one of their finest starts to a Premier League season. The side currently sits in 4th spot with 26 points and has just topped their Champions League group to reach the knockout stages. Given this impressive start, it may sound odd to suggest. That the side has the potential to endure a terrible season, yet there is a case to argue here. If you look at this website, you’ll see that Spurs are currently the 5th favorites to win the Premier League, an area that the bookies may have got very wrong indeed.
Here is exactly why Spurs have to anticipate the possibility of a disastrous season.
Antonio Conte’s Way
Everyone knows that Conte is a winner and that he has a track record of winning everywhere that he has been. Conte’s way is that he has a resolute team, with touches of flair that grind out results. At Spurs, however, this has proven very hard to implement. Currently, this Spurs side invites pressure on from the get-go, concedes goals at bad times, and then have to rally in the second half, throwing the kitchen sink at teams to try and get a result. This just isn’t sustainable and whilst things could improve, they could also go the other way.
Mental Exhaustion
Conte’s men have managed to gain a great reputation as a side that can come from behind when it is necessary. This is all well and good of course, but those skills are being called upon time and time again. The overall impact of this will be mental exhaustion on the players, who need to consistently go back to the emotional well and dig something out. When a side is up by 2 or 3 goals they are able to relax a little in the game. This can help to avoid injuries, improve confidence and ultimately help a team to keep winning. The current Spurs formula just isn’t sustainable.
Squad Depth
Whilst it is true that Conte and Levy have done well, along with Paratici, in strengthening this Spurs squad, they are still not able to count on real depth in terms of players who ‘get’ the system. Currently, for example, they are without Son, Richarlison, and Kulusevski, and they look utterly depleted going forward. This means that should any injuries of that ilk come again, Spurs will struggle. Given that they will be in 4 competitions and they have players heading to the World Cup this month, the side’s fitness will be heavily tested.
The general consensus is that this Spurs side will only continue to get better and that they are simply a group of relatively new players with a relatively new manager, trying to adjust. This may be the case and if so Spurs fans can be highly optimistic. It is however, just as probable that Spurs are at their peak now, and that the only way that they can go is down.
