Almost 60% of divorced people in a recent poll said that communication issues were one of the main problems that led to their divorce.
It’s normal in any relationship, whether you are in a marriage or not, to have communication problems from time to time. You are an imperfect human and you can only do the best with what you know.
But if it becomes the norm, then it is a serious issue you need to address sooner rather than later. And better communication and a deeper connection are 100% possible with a little help.
Here are a few tips to get you started on the path to solving your relationship issues.
Think Before You Speak (But Always Speak)
There is an old saying, “never go to bed angry.” But there is a lot of wisdom in taking the time to process your feelings before speaking so you do not say something you regret.
Shaming and degrading words towards your partner are much easier to forgive and forget when you don’t say them at all.
But it is important to speak your truth and share your innermost thoughts and feelings with your partner. Relationships need total honesty. Keeping silent about something important will lead to resentment.
And, it is also important that you allow your partner the time to speak their truth, too. If you both learn to listen better, you are well on your way to solving your communication issues.
Learn How To Apologize and Mean It
Most people do not know how to apologize. They think that the person who is “right” does not have to apologize.
But what if you both think you are right in a scenario?
The best relationship advice anyone can give you is to remember that your relationship is more important than being right. Apologize, mean it, and move on with your life without holding grudges.
Make More of an Effort
Some peoples’ love language is words of affirmation. Many relationship problems stem from not speaking each other’s love languages and telling them what they need to hear to feel loved.
You can work on your relationship problems by stepping up for your partner. Leave notes for them in their car, console them when they’ve had a bad day, and compliment them when they also make an effort.
You can also read books and listen to podcasts on how to solve your communication issues, too.
Try Couples Counseling
Some couples do not have the tools to fix their communication problems and that is 100% okay. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. Seeking a couples counselor is not a failure, it is a very brave thing to do.
You could even visit a counselor that is familiar with your beliefs and/or lifestyle. For example, you could try LGBTQ couples counseling or Muslim couples counseling.
Start Solving Your Communication Issues Today
Working through your communication issues will take time and commitment. But the relationship you have with your partner has the potential to be the deepest, most loving, and rewarding relationship of your life.
It is worth fighting for.
