How do hormones play a role in weight gain/loss?
Our hormones play a key role in our ability to maintain a healthy weight in both men and women. Balancing key hormones such as estrogen, testosterone, progesterone and the thyroid not only affect weight but other issues such as fatigue, brain fog, depression, hair loss and sleep issues, to name a few.
How do hormones affect aging and how does it vary between men and women?
The effect of declining hormones in both men and women will result in similar primary concerns but may be described differently by men and women. Men might express their frustration as feeling “not on their game anymore,” or not feeling as “strong” as they did a few years ago and difficulty losing belly fat. Women may express the typical symptoms of menopause which is associated with hot flashes, inability to sleep, lose weight or interest in sex.
For women in their 20’s/early 30’s, what do you recommend as first steps in a preventative aging routine?
It is never too soon to take charge of your health. If something doesn’t seem right, then seek professional guidance. We cannot prevent if we don’t act early on. When I meet with a patient, the most important thing I can do for that patient is to listen. We know our bodies better than anyone else so my time spent with my patients is hearing what they have to say. Declining hormones start in the 30’s and symptoms of aging begin to manifest.
Regarding beauty from the inside out approach, what are the key factors that can help aid in slowing the aging process?
Gut health is a primary factor. All too often I see patients who assume that certain stomach related processes are just their normal when in fact they can indicate just the opposite. The stomach is the key to our body’s overall health. We can do all the right things such as good nutrition, avoiding processed foods, exercise, sleep and supplementation, but if our stomachs are not working properly, patients won’t see the benefits of all their good work.
What are the top treatments requested from men?
Some of the top treatments requested by men are hormone replacement, weight loss, nutritional guidance, stem cell treatments for hair loss and sports related injuries.
What are the top treatments requested from women?
Some of the top treatments requested by women are weight loss, hormone replacement, cosmetic procedures such as Mesotherapy for cellulite and skin rejuvenation, Ultherapy for skin tightening, Clear and Brilliant for skin resurfacing and pore reduction, Botox and various fillers.
How do you go about creating custom weight loss plans for your patients?
First, I listen to what have they tried previously to get a sense of what has worked or not worked. I also get a sense of their personal likes and dislikes as it pertains to food. I then do Lab work, which is crucial for those patients who claim to have tried everything and have been unsuccessful. This will bring us back to hormone imbalance or perhaps allergies, gut issues and genetic testing, which gives me personalized detailed information on each patient.
Botox used to be the go-to for treating hyperhidrosis until MiraDry was introduced a few years ago. Is it safe to completely remove the sweat glands from the underarms? Are the results permanent?
Less than 1% of sweat glands are under the arms. In addition, a side effect is less/decrease in hair growth under the arms.
Ultherapy is a treatment to help tighten aging/sagging skin. Are the results permanent or are additional treatments needed for maintenance?
Ultherapy is an amazing treatment for tightening and lifting the skin. The results are natural and last up to two to three years. I think it is one of the top treatments to not only tighten, but to prevent sagging skin. But like all cosmetic procedures, they are best when done by a professional who understands the skin. I do all my cosmetic procedures for my patients myself. We have used Ultherapy successfully to treat the face, decolletage and loose skin above the knees.
