If somebody close to you has a drug problem, you’re probably extremely worried about them. However, it’s important you handle this situation carefully and with tact so that you can get them the help they need.
Be Open Minded and Non Judgemental
The first thing you should do is try to speak to your friend, although this can be a difficult subject to broach. The main thing is that you try to remain non judgemental, or this person is unlikely to open up to you. You should choose the right time to speak to them, so a time when you are both sober and in a place they are comfortable (in case they get emotional). Make sure you give them time to talk too, and bear in mind that this may be a conversation you have to have more than once.
It’s important to bear in mind that you can’t force somebody to stop taking drugs, but you could stage an intervention if you’re particularly worried, and help them find some form of help, such as counseling or a rehab center. Getting them to acknowledge they even have a problem can be tough. Make sure you’re as supportive as possible throughout it all and ensure they know you are always there to talk. Being critical, argumentative, and making it about you will not help this person, and may drive them further into drug use. That being said, you should not enable them to take drugs – e.g. take them to pick up. Below, you’ll find an eye opening infographic:
