Trying to choose the right kind of career means that you’re going to have a lot of questions. How tough will the education be, for example, how easy is it to get a job, and whether or not you have what it takes to work as a nurse?
Before deciding on anything final, it’s a good idea to figure this out, first of all, so that you can feel confident that you’ve made the right decision.
Luckily, we tend to get older and older these days, and nurses are definitely in high demand. While you should be able to get a job easy enough, it’s not to say that the work in itself will be particularly easy, though.
Here is a quick guide to what you should prepare yourself for before becoming a nurse so that you can embark on your career feeling prepared for the challenges.
#1 The shifts will be long
Anyone who knows a nurse or has worked in the field themselves is aware of the long hours; patients need to be looked after 24/7 so the shifts you’re going to be working will be both long and hard. It’s still very rewarding work, of course, but it’s a good idea to prepare yourself for the long shifts – which may be overnight in some cases.
Make sure that you have the right kind of shoes for being on your feet as well, by the way, so that you avoid any problems with your knees or ankles later in life. It’s the kind of stuff you may not think about while you’re still young, but all nurses are required to wear special shoes.
#2 You have a lot of specialization options
A lot of fresh nurses choose to progress with their education and find something to specialize in. It’s not just because they love being in school so much, though, rather than the fact that the specializations you can choose from are really exciting. Have a look at this online dnp midwifery program, for example, and browse the web for other options as well.
It’s good to keep this in mind in case you find that your days in the hospital or nursing home don’t give you quite what you expected; just find something you’re interested in and continue your education from there.
#3 Remember to ask for help
When you’re almost done with your degree, you’re going to find yourself out in the real world. Working as a nurse when you’re completely new to the field can be really overwhelming and even a bit intimidating; it’s all about having responsibility for somebody else’s well being, and messing it up could have huge consequences.
Remember to ask the more experienced nurses for help when you’re unsure about something – and don’t be afraid to lean on their expertise. They know how it is to be a fresh nurse and will be happy to help you out if you ask.
